Do people mind getting mentioned?

I was reading the questions category description (About the questions category) and I read these two things:

  • don’t @ mention people, possibly only when it’s urgent (not if it’s only urgent for you)
  • don’t @ mention people who work on commercial products directly

Now I’ve been doing exactly that to be honest. When something is about uSync I would tag Kevin, or when it’s about SEOChecker I would tag Richard for instance. I’m happy to stop doing this, but do the people here mind? So far, the use of mentioning people has been done carfully and correctly as far as I can tell. So should we change the rules, or should I change myself

And maybe if we have package related tags in the near future, this may be less of an issue because there is less need to tag a package creator for instance.

I mind being mentioned

Can’t speak for anyone else. If there’s a usync tag on the topic then Kevin is already following along (and gets notifications) as he is watching that tag.

For Richard, I’m happy to make tags as well.

Just to note as well, @ mentions for HQ members specifically are something to avoid, it might be that they are active on this forum, but it is a community forum, we expect community members to help each other first.

I expect HQ members to work on their notification settings anyway, but it is so easy to trap people into spending a few hours on the forum instead of actually getting work done.
So, instead, HQ members dip in when they want and can and pick topics that they want and can help with. If they have to feel guilty all the time because they didn’t answer when their name got dropped then it’s more likely they’ll avoid the forum altogether rather than engage where appropriate.

Yeah, that certainly makes sense to me.
