Use some sort of template in a topic start?

I’m sure everybody here is commited to helping each other, I know I am. However, after some time on the forum, the quality of the start posts is beginning to somewhat annoy me. For instance, nobody hardly ever mentions the exact Umbraco version they are using or the version of a package they are using. Or it’s just a post like: hey it’s not working with absolutely no additional information, or what they have tried themselves.

I’m not saying we should create strict rules or force everybody in a certain direction, but when you open an issue or discussion on the github tracker, you get at least some sort of template. I know that in the category description it’s said to try to give as much information as possible, but nobody sees that.

I don’t know what the possibilities of the forum software are, but perhaps a little more guidance wouldn’t hurt, just my 2 cents

From long experience: people who don’t want to put the effort in to ask a detailed question will just delete the template and ask an equally bad question as before the template existed (happens so, so much when PRs get created).

The Friendly thing to do would be for some people to have a default reply ready. I am experimenting with using AI to signal if there’s not enough information as well, but that’s a bit further down the line.

And yes, there is a plugin to provide a template, but I am very sensitive to not make it harder for people to ask a question that genuinely doesn’t fit the template.

In any case, if people can’t be bothered to ask a question with any kind of detail then I think it’s also fine to not give them an answer.

Since you are also Mr pull request, I absolutely believe your experiences

I think you are right that there are enough people who won’t put the required effort in to ask a good question. But from my experience here, there are also a lot of people that ask a good question but simply forget details like exact versions. Some guidance might help.

Is it possible to at least have link to the guidelines somewhere visible when you create a new topic for instance?
