UmbraDesktop 17.1.0: it just got a whole lot better (still ridiculous and cool though)

I just released UmbraDesktop 17.1.0. It ofcourse has a lot of needless gimmicks (it’s UmbraDesktop after all!), but also some really useful and sometimes unique things!

One of the main useful things, is that windows know if there are unsaved changes. You’ll see this as a dot in the window titlebar and as a dot in the taskbar. But more importantly, it ask for verification when the window gets closed or if you close the desktop.

But on top of that (and this is a feature on the roadmap of HQ), if you are editing a node and that node gets saved underwater by another editor, or AI, or you in another window, it will give you a message that saving now will override that changed content. I also check if a node gets trashed or deleted, and it will tell you as well.

I also added background jobs viewer. Here you can see what reoccuring jobs and distributed jobs are present, when they are due and when the last run was.

The catalogue (how apps appear in the launcher) now include all the Umbraco commercial packages. And the bug where there was an error when you select a background from the media.

Gimmick time!

  • There is a seperate add-on ENTERTAINMENT PACKAGE!! Umbraco.Community.UmbraDesktop.Entertainment. It will feature fun stuff. Right now it has minesweeper!

  • The backoffice now has theme support and ships with 5 themes: Umbraco, Umbraco 4 (retro), Windows 11, Windows 98 (retro) and (for those who like their buttons on the wrong side of the window) MacOS. The modern themes listen to the backoffice setting for light and dark mode. The high contrast mode takes the dark mode at this time. The retro themes have no dark mode.

So yeah, completely ridiculous again, but it’s all soooooo cool. And there are so many ideas on what could be improved. The issue list as 26 items, almost all are enhancements
