I’ve just done a test upgrade of a U13 site to the U17 RC, and one of the first things I noticed is that some of the icons on document types are now a bit strange.
For example, we have an “employee details” document type, using icon-badge. In 13 this shows up like a staff ID card, but in 17 it’s coming up as a circle with bumpy edges, i.e. nothing like a badge at all.
I’ve noticed that some of the other icons are a bit strange too, for example icon-contrast is lacking the actual contrast, icon-barcode is just three vertical lines and looks nothing like a barcode, and icon-camera-roll has changed from a roll of film to something resembling an audio cassette. That’s just a cursory glance and I’m sure I’ll find more oddities if I look more closely.
Are these just placeholder icons that’ll be fixed up in the proper release, or were these changes intentional?
In 17 there are new icons and the old ones are mapped to the new ones, but they are not always ideal I think. The circle with bumpy edges is the default icon for when an icon cannot be found. Although there should be a new icon for every ‘old’ icon, it’s not always the case.
I think your perspective could be right, as Luuk describes all icons have been replaced, some may not have the right new representation.
I would suggest doing specific GitHub issue showing the old and the new one. Then it becomes clear if the new icon is a bad replacement.
It is thought a bit late from a release/breaking changes perspective, but lets look at the individual case (icon) and make individual calls on wether it can be replaced with a better one. Without breaking the experience for those who started a new project with the icons of v.17.
I have not investigated if this is possible, but eventually it may be possible for you to overwrite the builtin icons with your own version, to fix this problem in your particular project.
Thanks for the replies. To clarify, what I’m calling a “bumpy circle” is different from the “dashed circle” (I’m not seeing any dashed circles myself, but I saw a screenshot when I was looking for existing forum posts, and it’s definitely a different thing).
I’ve tried a different browser and it’s doing the same thing so is probably not a browser cache issue.
It looks like icon-vcard is a suitable replacement for the old icon-badge: it’s not the same design, but it gets the same general point across.
