Has anyone managed to create a Uskinned custom component?

Yes, I’ve done that once or twice — it takes some effort to make it feel like a “normal” component, since standard uSkinned components have all sorts of settings that you don’t necessarily factored in when you accepted the task 
, but which editors would take for granted…
I haven’t built any for the new WYSIWYG layout builder, so I don’t know if there’s some extra steps involved with that.

I think I must be doing something wrong because I follow all the steps on the Uskinned guide as well as another guide I found which results in a component being added. However, if I try to add content to it and preview its always just a blank page.
