Default Media types not working after upgrade

I have upgraded a site - originally 8 then upgraded to 10 then to 13.

According to Default Data/Media Types | Umbraco CMS
Making the data types and media types myself should work. However it doesn’t - e.g. SVG uploads are recognised as files, clicking Media - Create shows only File, Folder, Image.

Is there something I missed?

After some more investigation I found the answer is YES there is something that I missed!

It is not in the documentation (maybe it should be)

You have to set Permission to Allow as Root

Also you need to set the existing Folder media type to allow each of those new media types as children

Are you using uSync? I’ve had instances where upgrades would work great, only to be overridden by what is in the uSync files…
