I’ve recently finished building my first Umbraco extension, and it ended up becoming quite a bit more ambitious than I originally planned ![]()
What started as a simple “generate with AI” button for an Umbraco property gradually turned into ThtaAI. An open-source Umbraco 17 package with AI-assisted text and rich text editing, image search, and eventually the ability to generate entire pages based on the site’s existing content structure.
I’ve written up the journey, including some of the problems along the way like, getting LLMs to return usable Umbraco schemas, nested blocks, mapping generated content back to Umbraco and the point where I realised no amount of prompt engineering was going to fix everything!
Hopefully it’s useful if you’re experimenting with the new backoffice extension APIs or thinking about integrating AI into Umbraco.

The package is also completely open source, so feel free to have a look through the code and commit history:
Would be really interested to hear how other people are approaching AI within Umbraco, or any ideas for where the package could go next.
