I’m sorry, but Umbraco is a free open source platform where the idea is that everybody helps everybody. You can view the source code and you can contribute. Umbraco does not make any money from the CMS itself and you don’t have to pay anything to use it.
So it’s a bit harsh to say that you’re not going to ‘do the work for you’. In that case, you could pay for Umbraco support and they will gladly help you fast when you need to. Jacob is also here entirely voluntary anyway, he is by no means obligated to do so.
That does not mean that I don’t get the frustration sometimes and I also sometimes feel that somtimes things are just missing or too difficult. But still, I find your post a little strong.
Harsh, well maybe it was. I’ve been working with umbraco since version 4, and Umbraco is no longer this scrappy little underdog company anymore. They have 100+ employees, with a flagship cloud based premium product, all based on the foundation of this open source code. With them being the size that they are now, with the resources at their disposal, then I think I can be a little harsh when pointing out the lack of documentation of performing an action as simple as showing an image in the backoffice. Something the developer at the time should have documented right from the start as it was being developed. I dont think thats unreasonable to ask anymore.
I think in this particular case, yes it should have been documented, something an organization the size Umbraco is now, should be a standard procedure when developing new features because on the opposite side we have thousands and thousands of developers who are dependent on this being documented.
So with that said, yes I could contribute in this case, someone else can, and Umbraco can put much of their success on the free contributions done by the community, that they can put directly into their premium products.
I have defended Umbraco all the way since version 4, but the Umbraco then compared to now is a whole different level, so my demands have changed accordingly.
A bit of a long post, but I want to make my intention clear. I agree that I might have been a bit harsh, working hours and hours on frustrating tasks takes a toll on your temper, but my point still stands. Now, I think I have derailed this thread long enough.
